In 1990 the first lists were drawn up, but the project was subsequently modified by my decision to include also persons known only from literary sources, so as to produce a work useful to both the historian and the archaeologist, who needs a comprehensive listing in order to handle newly discovered epigraphical texts. As progress was made in the collection of names of Macedonians attested epigraphically outside Macedonia, it became possible to make reference to this material in my writings on the Macedonian onomasticon. The planning of the work has already been reported as part of the project in the Symposium Ancient Macedonia IV in 1983. Sakellariou, the founder and director, at that time, of the Centre for Greek and Roman Antiquity, to whom I would like, once more, to express my gratitude for the opportunity given to me. The present work was planned as part of the Prosopography of Ancient Macedonia, a project entrusted to me in 1980 by Professor M.B.
